2024 IEEE Region 5 Robotics Competition
Details
As part of my Senior Design capstone, I collaborated with a team of four classmates to build a fully autonomous robot for the 2024 IEEE Region 5 Robotics Competition, held in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The challenge centered on endurance, strategy, and efficiency: each robot had to navigate a course in real time while competing side-by-side with others—all powered solely by a supercapacitor. What made the competition unique was its power constraint. Robots began each round wirelessly charged via a Qi pad, with limited opportunities to recharge mid-race at designated stations. This forced us to be intentional with every design decision. My focus was on optimizing power efficiency through both hardware and software. We selected low-power components, stripped down unnecessary operations, and designed algorithms that prioritized survival without sacrificing performance. The result: our robot outlasted and outpaced the field, earning first place.
